Dental Veneers

22 Dec

Veneers are shells of tooth-coloured material (which can be either porcelain, ceramic or composite bonding material). They are “cemented” to the front surface of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance.

a) Porcelain veneers can be used to repair minor tooth imperfections and defects.
b) Porcelain veneers can be used to cover over and conceal fillings that have become stained or discolored.
c) Porcelain veneers can be used to make color changes for teeth that have permanent stains.
d) In some cases, porcelain veneers can be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain Laminate Veneers

09 Oct

The possibility of successfully bonding a ceramic restoration to etched enamel was first described by Rochette in 1975 when he reported the restoration of a fractured incisor with an etched silanated porcelain block. A decade later, Horn in 1983, reported success in bonding a thin layer of porcelain to the etched enamel surface with a composite luting cement.

In the same year, Calamia and Simonsen reported the possibility of etching porcelain specimens with 7.5% hydrofluoric acid for 20 minutes. Etching produces a mechanical bond between microporosities on the veneer and resin tags. An additional chemical bond is produced if silane coupling agent was applied to the surface of the finished etched porcelain veneer then bonded to the composite resin.

Veneer in Esthetics

21 Sep

Esthetics has been the single most prominent motivating factor for a patient to seek dental treatment. When a patient asks to improve the appearance of his teeth, dentists have moral obligation to consider the biological cost in order to achieve the desirable outcome. The role of veneer in restoring a beautiful smile should be known. A good case selection will give dentist a predictable result. When is it not appropriate to use the veneer option? What is the importance of diagnostic wax up? What is the role of provisional restoration? All of these should be known by the dentist.

Porcelain laminate veneers is gaining popularity in modern dentistry due to its high success rate, superior esthetic result and conservation of tooth structure. Veneers are used for simple Class IV restorations minimal diastema closure, tooth abrasion, tooth erosion and tooth wear. Oral Hygiene on Making an Impression

12 Apr

Whether we like it or not, every face-to-face human interaction is initially based on appearances. Maintaining good oral health and making sure that your smile looks its best can go a long way towards giving you the confidence you need to make the right first impression. Not only does oral hygiene affect your social life in terms of appearance, but it can also affect your entire body in terms of health. An unhealthy mouth can precipitate or signal other health issues, so optimal dental care and hygiene is more critical than simply creating a positive social image. Proper dental care and appropriate procedures to maintain or enhance our oral health can prevent health problems and tooth loss throughout our lives.

Good oral care begins with proper hygiene so learning and following a routine dental regimen is the first step towards maintaining optimal oral health. A healthy diet, low in sugar paired with daily brushing and flossing, particularly after meals and snacks is still the most recommended way to manage a healthy mouth. Chewing only sugarless gum, not smoking and keeping tabs on your oral health with self-examinations and regular visits to your dentist are some other commitments that can assist in the maintenance of your teeth and gums. Conditions to look for when examining your own mouth include swollen or discolored gums, chipped, discolored or loose teeth and sores or abnormalities in any area of the mouth.

Porcelain veneers and straightening of teeth are popular methods to create a more functional bite and enhance the appearance of your mouth and smile.

Caring for your Veneers

10 Jan

Let us remember that this is a prosthesis, a veneer can never be as strong as our natural teeth and like our natural teeth, they can be subjected to wear and tear. We must care for it by not biting hard food directly on it like nuts or chips.

Patients who have functional habits like night grinding or clenching should make sure to wear their mouth guard when sleeping to protect your veneers especially those who have underdone TMJ treatment.

Mild brushing is recommended as veneers are highly polished, they may last from 5 t0 15 years depending on how good a patient you are.

Try a smile reconstruction, veneers are a perfect recommendation.

The Benefits of Veneers

06 Dec

Veneer provides protection to badly abraded teeth; it is also a conservative alternative to having crowns. Because veneers are so thin, there is minimal reduction done on tooth thus we preserve the remaining tooth tissue, there may even be cases of non tooth reduction.

For some who have badly discoloured teeth that undergoes frequent teeth whitening, veneers can be the best treatment option, providing permanent whitened teeth minus the regular hypersensitivity which can later on lead to pulp damage.

Veneer Procedure

As proper diagnosis is done, the smile design should also be considered, as well as the shape and shade for the final restoration, all these are discussed and decided upon and an informed consent is signed.

The dentist will give local anaesthesia as some patients are prone to hypersensitivity or are apprehensive as far as tooth grinding is concerned.

The dentist now does the reduction as per decided on the shape of the final restoration and the smile design. At times, very minimal reduction is needed.

An impression is now taken to prepare the mold where the veneer will be constructed.

A temporary veneer is placed for aesthetic purpose but in some cases where very minimal reduction is done, we can do away with the temporaries.

At times post operative sensitivity can be experienced but this may be transient as veneers entail very minimal reduction, most of the time not extending to the dentin.

Installation schedule may depend on what material to use, but the bonding technique for both composite and porcelain veneers are quite the same.

Treatment Options for Veneers

21 Nov

Veneers can be done in one sitting, directly bonded composites give instant result. This is ideal for very busy patients who cannot afford another appointment for the final sitting of the veneer.

Composite veneers can also be done indirectly, by the cosmetic dentist or the laboratory. After tooth reduction an impression will be taken and the composite veneer can be constructed on the tooth mold. This does not need special machines and may be installed or bonded on the tooth the next day.

Ceramic or porcelain veneers are more technique sensitive but are more durable compared to the composite veneer, more highly polished and so it cost much more.

Both materials can give very good result, a smile reconstruction, pearly white and straight teeth.
